After defeating Shingo Takagi at NJPW Battle In The Valley PPV, current AEW star Jon Moxley challenged IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Tetsuya Naito.
The match took place at the Windy City Riot PPV, and Moxley made history by defeating Naito to become the new IWGP World Heavyweight Champion.
With this victory, Moxley has etched his name in history by setting a unique record of being the first wrestler to hold the IWGP, AEW, and WWE World Championships.
Moxley’s wife and current AEW backstage interviewer, Renee Paquette, was at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, where the event emanated from. Along with Paquette, AEW President Tony Khan was also in attendance, which stirred up the rumors of a potential Moxley victory, which eventually came true.
What’s Next For Jon Moxley?
It’s been almost a month since Moxley last competed in AEW, and it will be interesting to see how Tony Khan will integrate Moxley into the company’s storyline with him as the new IWGP World Heavyweight Champion. With Samoa Joe as the current AEW World Heavyweight Champion, we could see a potential champion vs. champion match down the road if that’s the direction AEW looks to take.
With his former Shield brothers, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, putting on a great show at WrestleMania 40, Moxley adds to the group’s legacy by adding yet another world championship to their collection.
