WrestleMania 40 kicked off a new era in WWE, and under Triple H’s capable guidance, the company has been reclaiming its lost reputation by putting on more engaging wrestling and storylines. With WrestleMania 40 in the history books, the company will focus on its upcoming premium live events, with some extra concentration on WWE SummerSlam, emanating from the Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 3, 2024.
The King and Queen of the Ring winners Gunther and Nia Jax will challenge the World Heavyweight and WWE Women’s Champions at the event, and with the rumors of a potential Roman Reigns return, this year’s SummerSlam is turning out to be a can’t miss opportunity for the fans.
There’s no doubt that SummerSlam would be another step in solidifying the new era, and what would be more impactful than crowning some new champions? With that in mind, let’s look at the five new champions we might see in WWE after SummerSlam 2024.
AOP – World Tag Team Champions
Karrion Kross’ stint on the WWE main roster has seen more downs than ups ever since his first call-up in 2021. After getting released and re-hired, Kross’ stock continued to plummet in the company, and the most recent development in his WWE career is him forming the Final Testament faction with his wife Scarlett, Paul Ellering, and The Authors of Pain.
Similar to Kross’ previous directions, the faction is also going pretty underwhelming so far. But if there’s one thing wrestling fans have learned over the past few months, it’s to never bet against Triple H and his booking.
WWE should take the faction to the next level apart from the weekly backstage promo segments, and having a destructive tag team like AOP allows them to get their hands on some gold in the World Tag Team Championships.
With DIY having multiple failed attempts at the title and the Creed Brothers likely heading into a rumored partnership with Chad Gable, The AOP are viable candidates to hold the World Tag Team titles after SummerSlam.
Nia Jax – WWE Women’s Champion
Nia Jax is enjoying quite an impactful run since her return to WWE in September 2023. She looked dominant throughout her current run and has made history by winning the 2024 Queen of the Ring tournament.
The victory earned her a title opportunity at SummerSlam, and since she’s a member of SmackDown, she’ll most likely face Bayley for the WWE Women’s Championship.
Bayley won the title at WrestleMania 40 from her former Damage CTRL ally, Iyo Sky, and is having a decent run. With candidates like Bianca Belair, Jade Cargill, and Tiffany Stratton in the mix, Nia Jax has a healthy chance at dethroning Bayley.
Despite the recent backlash over her comment against Jade Cargill, Tiffany Stratton remains a prime contender for the title. But WWE can have her win this year’s women’s MITB ladder match and wait a bit more to put the gold on her and take their chances with Nia Jax at SummerSlam.
LA Knight – United States Champion
Wrestling fans expected this match to happen at WrestleMania 40, but WWE decided to hold off on the feud for a bit longer. However, the company teased a potential showdown between LA Knight and United States Champion Logan Paul on last week’s episode of SmackDown, when they had a brief staredown backstage.
Despite succeeding in other storylines, WWE has been facing some criticism over not taking advantage of the organic popularity of superstars like LA Knight and Jey Uso. Knight has had multiple failed opportunities to win his first singles championship in WWE, and it’s time for Triple H to finally pull the trigger on the highly expected feud between Knight and Logan Paul.
Logan Paul’s brief scuffle with Michael Cole at the King & Queen of the Ring PLE started rumors of WWE booking a feud between Paul and Michael Cole’s colleague Pat McAfee. But a showdown between LA Knight and Logan Paul sounds like a better idea for SummerSlam.
Bron Breakker – Intercontinental Champion
Looking at how WWE has been booking Bron Breakker since his call-up to the main roster, it’s clear that the former NXT Champion would breach the main event picture sooner than most expect.
He’s embraced a heel persona over the past few weeks and has picked Ricochet as his first major target. It could lead towards a showdown between the two superstars at the next PLE .
However, by the time Breakker reaches SummerSlam, WWE should look to put him in contention for the Intercontinental Championship.
With Chad Gable being the prime candidate to dethrone Sami Zayn, the change could happen at the next PLE. Gable can have a decent run with the title till August before dropping it to Breakker at SummerSlam.
Bron Breakker’s aggressive persona surpasses the heel/babyface spectrum, and WWE can establish him as a monstrous superstar like Brock Lesnar.
Gunther – World Heavyweight Champion
After the end of his 666-day run as the Intercontinental Champion, Gunther gained back his momentum by advancing to the final of the 2024 King of the Ring tournament.
He picked up a controversial win over Randy Orton in the final and got crowned as this year’s King of the Ring. The victory earned him the right to challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam,
The World Heavyweight Championship picture is picking up steam with Drew McIntyre in line to challenge Damian Priest for the title at Clash at the Castle in his home country, Scotland.
McIntyre is the favorite to dethrone Priest at the event, but CM Punk’s involvement might cause some problems for McIntyre to enjoy a lengthy run. Punk already cost McIntyre the title at WrestleMania 40, and if he gets cleared by the time of the Money in the Bank PLE, Punk is a top contender to win the briefcase for the third time.
However, the feud might not need the title, as the two superstars already have enough heat between them to rely on the storyline alone for a great match. It allows Gunther to take advantage and win the World Heavyweight Championship when he gets his chance at SummerSlam.
