Ever since Gunther won the World Heavyweight Championship, wrestling fans demanded WWE book a match between The Ring General and Ilja Dragunov. Dragunov is one of the few superstars in WWE to hold a victory against Gunther, and fans wanted to see them square off on the main roster for the world title.

WWE was slowly building up to the match by running Gunther vs. Ilja Dragunov on several live events over the past few weeks. However, a televised title match between the two superstars might not happen soon as Dragunov sustained a torn ACL injury that will sideline him for a considerable amount of time.

On the September 30, 2024, episode of Raw, the commentary team announced that Dragunov sustained a torn ACL during a match against Gunther at a live event on September 28. They revealed that Dragunov will be out of action for six to nine months due to the severity of the injury.

Ilja Dragunov is a 1-time NXT and NXT United Kingdom Champion. WWE called him to the main roster in April 2024 and gradually built him up as a singles performer. The injury comes at an unfortunate time as he was set to breach the main event picture against Gunther, let’s hope he undergoes a speedy recovery.
